You have 3 options to buy iphone online as it looks today. However this will change and more stores will get rights to sell the iphone. If you are looking for discounts and unlocked iphones, then the only option for you is eBay. At AT&T and The Apple Store you will have to pay full price, which is $399 for the 8GB model. (Apple terminated the 4GB model two months after the iphone release.)
You will also need to sign up for a 2 year plan with AT&T Wireless. That's why many buy iphone from eBay auctions, to get away with the mandatory 2 year plan with AT&T Wireless. (I don't like that you have to switch to AT&T if you want your iphone to work. It should be sold unlocked, so you could choose supplier yourself.)

The Apple Online Store
The Apple Online Store is apple's official store on the internet. Here they sell every apple gadget you can imagine. From computers such as the macbook pro, to ipods, apple TVs, iMacs and ofcourse the iphone.
I bought my new ipod touch from the Apple Online Store. It took about a month before I received my package. A bit slow but they are very busy. I also choosed the free laser engraving they offer on apple products.
They are a very reliable store and they offer you great support if you have any questions.

The AT&T Online Shop
This is the cell phone provider AT&T's online shop. They have a very massive cellphone shop with lots of different models, including the apple iphone.
I haven't bought anything from here before, so I really don't have any experience with their costumer service and shipping etc..
Remember that you have to sign up for the 2 year plan with AT&T here as well. =(!

eBay Auctions
You can also buy the iphone from eBay. You can make a pretty good deal here. I have seen brand new 8GB iphones (new in box) go for about $280. That's a nice $100 discount.
This is also the only place were you can buy an unlocked iphone. (Not locked to AT&T's 2 year plan).
Good deals happen all the time. Currently (2007-12-13) i'm looking at an auction with 34 min left and the bid price is $290. I know someone is going to make a pretty decent deal there.
